Who is
Darby?
FOUNDER AND PRINCIPAL ACCESSIBILITY STRATEGIST AT LEVEL PLAYING FIELD
With over 15 years of experience as an accessibility strategist, Darby has established herself as a trailblazer in eliminating barriers in the built environment. Darby’s dedication to universal design and her in-depth knowledge of building codes, coupled with her certification as an ADA Coordinator, have empowered her to lead significant accessibility improvements at municipal, provincial, and national levels. In 2015, she founded Level Playing Field Inc. (LPF) with the mission of creating inclusive and accessible spaces that go beyond mere compliance. Her approach ensures that accessibility is woven into the fabric of design, benefiting all users.
Darby’s commitment to accessibility and inclusivity has earned her widespread recognition, including being named one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 and one of the Top 25 Women of Influence in Canada. Her work with LPF spans various sectors, from public spaces to private developments, where she has been a key player in helping organizations achieve true inclusivity. Darby has also worked on many large-scale projects across North America, advocating for holistic solutions that address accessibility from the ground up.
Accessibility isn’t just about meeting the minimum requirements, it’s about designing environments that work for everyone.
Her personal experience with mild cerebral palsy has been a driving force behind her professional career. Growing up, Darby faced challenges that shaped her understanding of the barriers people with disabilities encounter daily. An avid sports enthusiast, she defied expectations by becoming a competitive para-alpine skier, overcoming both her physical limitations and her fear of heights. She remains actively involved in Team Services for tennis tournaments, junior hockey, and other major global sporting events. Previously, she contributed to the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and Paralympics, World Hockey Championships, and World Junior Hockey Championships, gaining valuable experience at the international level. Darby’s expertise in Team Services gives her a deep understanding of the logistical needs for athletes, staff, and organizers, as well as the unique challenges of being a disabled staffer in an able-bodied sports world.
Darby’s philosophy is rooted in resilience: “We all fall at some point in our lives, whether figuratively or literally. What matters is how we get up—and laughing along the way helps.” Her journey, both personally and professionally, continues to inspire others to challenge societal norms and push for true inclusivity in all aspects of life. As a speaker and advocate, Darby shares her experiences and expertise to motivate organizations to think beyond compliance and embrace accessibility as a core value.
